Rocking out Roth style

TALI Roth might be a good listener and advice councilor, but she has more than one skill up her sleeve.

The 22-year-old psychology and social work graduate launched her own clothing line in 2009, with her first collection made up exclusively of dresses.

The clothing line is a realisation of a decade-long dream for the Melbourne-based designer.

“I have been drawing clothes and been obsessed by fashion since I was tiny,”  Roth explains, adding that she was able to follow her passion for fashion after completing psychology studies at Monash University.

Her first collection defines the Tali Roth aesthetic, which is all about easy dressing with a glamorous and very girlie edge. She makes use of soft fabrics and electric pop colours in a range of shapes including flirty mini’s in thick cotton jersey and more sophisticated silk backless and one-shoulder pieces.

Roth’s inspirations are drawn from woman’s curves and bright colour pallets.  “I like a conservative look in the front and having a surprise when you turn around,” says Roth of her signature backless pieces.

Spreading her love of fashion, Roth volunteered in Tanzania teaching local women how to sew. With their new skills, she also helped them set up a small shop called Kipepeo, meaning butterfly in Swahili.

She taught the women to gain profit from their creations by selling it to tourists.

“I’m a strong believer in teaching people how to do things for themselves, something which is long term,” says Roth.

Roth's clothing has been featured in WhoIn StyleCosmopolitan and Famous magazine.

What an inspiration. If I were a woman - or had any thoughts about cross dressing - I know where I’d be shopping!
