Stripping down

Stripping down

In an open minded society, it's no wonder that the art of the strip tease has made itself popular in mainstream society. Burlesque has seduced us entirely, leaving us wanting more shows, performances and club themed nights. For those who find the term somewhat foreign, burlesque is a style of performance art that's reemerged itself in the last ten or so years. With the Queen of modern Burlesque, Dita Von Teese, giving this art form new life, it's only continued to grow. Themed clubs such as Red Bennies, have begun popping up all over Melbourne, as have classes which invite the public to learn the oh-so-seductive art of strip tease.

In a completely classy and nostalgic manner, burlesque has made its mark on Melbourne and is no doubt here to stay, until the next big trend comes along.

Famine Affair

Famine Affair

It's happened, the world has gone topsy turvy and the role of the male has been warped by indie pop/rock band Of Montreal. In their slightly risque video Famine Affair, Kevin Barnes and his gang have put together quite the music clip, no doubt leaving audiences a little shocked and smug. In a complete role reversal Barnes is surrounded by an all female empire, purely being a portable sperm bank. For the females in the audience, enjoy this moment of male submission coupled with a boppy 80s pop inspired track. Video clip aside, the album False Priest is worth your time, with 13 tracks than incorporate everything from funk and r'n'b to indie pop, its bound to please even the most fussiest of ears.

Ride my bike..

As the weather improves and the days become long, what better activity is there to pass the hours than bike riding? That's what Matt Hurst from The Humble Vintage thinks, hiring out some beautiful vintage rides for a small fee. After breaking into the Melbourne transport scene, things are moving along smoothly, with three pick up store locations (Surface Pop Up, 11 Carlisle St, St Kilda, 1000 Pound Bend, Little Lonsdale and Rose St Artist Market, Fitzroy) and the occasional drop off from Matt personally. Celebrating Melbourne's culture and scenery The Humble Vintage Bike has recently launched the spring Melbourne for Visitors and Casual Cyclists guide, with bike paths and places to enjoy this season, available from Metropolis, The Paperback and all Readings bookstores. So if you're looking for something different to do this year, head to the Humble Vintage and book yourself a bike.

So Vague.

History has seen many strong forces of women banding together to take on the music charts and the world, but none have done so quite like Nouvelle Vague. Camille, Mélanie Pain, Phoebe Killdeer, Nadeah Miranda, Helena Noguerra and Mareva Galanter make elegant, sensual and original music that tip toes between the lines of Post Punk, Bosa Nova and New Wave.
