New from the French airwaves…

As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, Summer's is indeed almost over - but that doesn't mean we can't still fall in love with a new summery tune.

From the 2010 edition of the So Frenchy So Chic series, we present you an emerging French singer/songwriter who goes simply by the name of "M"... and his wonderful animated video that's far from simple.

M - "Le Roi Des Ombres"

The uniform project

The uniform project

How often do we ladies spend an absolute fortune on a dress that we can only wear once? The answer is too often. To try to teach us about sustainable fashion, blogger Sheena Matheiken, has pledged to wear one dress for one year. Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. “Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative license to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade's boudoir” Says Matheiken. The Uniform project is a year long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, based in India. The foundation is dedicated to the education, uniforms and educational expenses of  children who live in the Indian slums. So far the project had raised $44,000 and put 122 kids in school! To donate to the cause go to http://www.theuniformproject.com/home/donate.html

Tablet round-up

The buzz surrounding eBooks and Tablets dominating 2010 and saving the magazine and newspaper industries grows each day. The latest fictional "demo" looks damn fine, but as Fast Company points out, raises immense issues surrounding the re-design of existing content. Check out Swedish publisher Bonnier's great video and FC's brief but concise response here.

Polo ponies

Polo ponies

Fashion’s finest came out to play on Saturday at the Albert Park Lakeside Polo. Champaign was flowing and the guests and players mingled. Fashion on the field was sponsored by non other than Ed Hardy who so generously gave away a handsome sum of moolah to go shopping with. When the sun came out the game got serious! A Ferrari came zipping past, dropped the ball and the horses were off! Galloping back and forth, the crowd could not take their eye off the horses. The after party kicked off at Riva and lasted well into the night. Ooh I do love a bit of old school polo!

Burkah Barbie

Barbie has been spoilt for her 50th anniversary. Not only did she get a makeover from Christian Louboutin but now a cultural one. Italian designer Eliana Lorena designed Burkah Barbie, so that girls all over the world could play with something that represented them. The traditional Islamic dressed doll will be auctioned off at a charity event in connection with the Sotheby’s for Save the Children.

Britain houses fugly people

Britain houses fugly people

According to the website beautifulpeople.com the British are among the ugliest people in the world. Only one in eight men and three in 20 women have been accepted into the elite-dating site. The site allows members to rate other members of the opposite sex based on a photo. They have a period of 48 hours for a thumbs up or thumbs down rating. The site's statistics states that Swedish men have proven to be the most successful as have the Norwegian women. According to news.com.au Beautiful People managing director Greg Hodge said "I would say Britain is stumbling because they don't spend as much time polishing up their appearance and they are letting themselves down on physical fitness. Next to Brazilian and Scandinavian beauties, British people just aren't as toned or glamorous." Russian women have a 44 per cent acceptance rate and their men have a bah baow (meaning zero) acceptance. I find this whole story hilarious considering the two people in the photo are hardly models! Ah well I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Princeton leaders in intellect and now. . . fashion?

Top American University Princeton, are introducing a new subject called "Model Memoirs: The Life Stories of International Fashion Models." I love it, models are not supposed to be smart, but now they are taking over a university near you! The course description focuses on “Exploring the life-writing of American, African, and Asian women in the fashion industry as a launching point for thinking about race, gender, and class. How do ethnicity and femininity intersect? How are authenticity and difference commodified? How do women construct identities through narrative and negotiate their relationships to their bodies, families, and nations? This course will include guest lectures by fashion editors and models; discussions of contemporary television programs, global fashion, and cultural studies; and student self-narratives about their relationships with cultural standards of beauty, whether vexed or not.” The sample-reading list consists of biographies from international models such as Alek Wek, Irina Pantaeva, Jillian Shanebrook and Waris Diric.

Whores are us

Whore! Magazine is only a stone throw away from being the next “must have” fashion mag. Launching officially in the Spring of 2010, this mag is aimed at “celebrating the current and historical qualities of women who have defined a role for themselves outside the status quo”. It focuses on fashion, music, art and design with a twist. This quarterly print magazine investigates culture, ascendancy, shame, and the desire to be. Just in case you are already so enthused before the mag hits the shelf, you can buy a Whore! mug, singlet or g-string… just what every little Harlot needs to make her self feel at home!
