Burkah Barbie

Barbie has been spoilt for her 50th anniversary. Not only did she get a makeover from Christian Louboutin but now a cultural one. Italian designer Eliana Lorena designed Burkah Barbie, so that girls all over the world could play with something that represented them. The traditional Islamic dressed doll will be auctioned off at a charity event in connection with the Sotheby’s for Save the Children.

Movember for the ladettes

Yes guys its almost over, Movember is coming to an end! Girls get ready for December and itch free smooches! For those of you who don’t know Movember is an annual, month-long celebration in November of the moustache, highlighting men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.

Demitass Jewerlry has created a line called ‘Demistache’ which are all moustache shaped necklaces.  It’s great to see the ladies getting involved; I mean we can ‘t help it if we cant grow facial hair! So I guess this necklace is the next best thing right?

Strutting stilettos

In where else but Paris would we find 100 crazed women competing for the Stiletto championship race! Sarenza.com are the founders and sponsors for this crazy event. The lucky winner receives 3,000 Euros worth of shoes! But I’m assuming that after a race like that all you would want to buy is slippers! The race is broken into three 180-meter relays and the ladies must wear at least three-inch heels. There are 32 teams in the running and a medical support team is always at the ready! The 2008 winners, team "Talk To My Foot (Parle A Mon Pied)" will be competing again this year, a trio comprised of a TV journalist, a psychologist and a lawyer. See, its not just for dumb bimbos smart women get a kick out of it too!

The roof top cinema is now in session.

Its that time of year again! The roof top cinema 09/10 is now in session. There is nothing better than on warm night sitting amongst the sky scrapers in deck chairs! Rooftop Cinema has always been about showing great movies in a cinematic setting because films are affected by the environment in which they’re shown. So, while their program will host current releases, this season will continue to present the best classic and cult films with the knowledge that they will always reveal something new. It is a great idea for beer o’clock, after work, or even a date, something a little different! To find session times head to tp://www.rooftopcinema.com.au/program

Britain houses fugly people

Britain houses fugly people

According to the website beautifulpeople.com the British are among the ugliest people in the world. Only one in eight men and three in 20 women have been accepted into the elite-dating site. The site allows members to rate other members of the opposite sex based on a photo. They have a period of 48 hours for a thumbs up or thumbs down rating. The site's statistics states that Swedish men have proven to be the most successful as have the Norwegian women. According to news.com.au Beautiful People managing director Greg Hodge said "I would say Britain is stumbling because they don't spend as much time polishing up their appearance and they are letting themselves down on physical fitness. Next to Brazilian and Scandinavian beauties, British people just aren't as toned or glamorous." Russian women have a 44 per cent acceptance rate and their men have a bah baow (meaning zero) acceptance. I find this whole story hilarious considering the two people in the photo are hardly models! Ah well I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Princeton leaders in intellect and now. . . fashion?

Top American University Princeton, are introducing a new subject called "Model Memoirs: The Life Stories of International Fashion Models." I love it, models are not supposed to be smart, but now they are taking over a university near you! The course description focuses on “Exploring the life-writing of American, African, and Asian women in the fashion industry as a launching point for thinking about race, gender, and class. How do ethnicity and femininity intersect? How are authenticity and difference commodified? How do women construct identities through narrative and negotiate their relationships to their bodies, families, and nations? This course will include guest lectures by fashion editors and models; discussions of contemporary television programs, global fashion, and cultural studies; and student self-narratives about their relationships with cultural standards of beauty, whether vexed or not.” The sample-reading list consists of biographies from international models such as Alek Wek, Irina Pantaeva, Jillian Shanebrook and Waris Diric.

Shakespeare gets all the girls

Shakespeare gets all the girls

On November the 9th, I went to see Bell Shakespeare’s performance of Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare at the Playhouse in Sydney Opera House.  Director Marion Potts wished to remove the meta-theatrical ideal of having men playing male characters on stage and have the audience overcome the obstacle of gender when engaging with such a chauvinistic play. To do this, she used an all-female cast. But her radical ideas didn’t stop there - mixing early-modern English language with a karaoke bar, gambling and disco balls. This aesthetic and the song choices confused the text alongside Kate (Lotte St Clair) and Bianca’s (Emily Rose Brennan) costumes – dressing gowns, UGG boots and slippers. It did not fulfil Potts’ original argument about overcoming the chauvinism in the text by providing a target for female ridicule in Bianca.  It looked a mish mash of themes, Bianca being particularly over childish and stroppy in her fluffy pink slippers and dressing gown singing flamboyantly down a microphone to 70’s, 80’s and 90’s songs, which became an embarrassment at times.

When bad fashion happens to good Kittys!

When bad fashion happens to good Kittys!

Japanese fashion label United bamboo have moved from ladies wear into cat wear.  I didn’t get the memo but apparently Tokyo is the cat’s fashion capital! While they are at it they may as well get a pawdicure as well! I wonder if any of them ask themselves “does this outfit make my fur look fat?”. Really when would cats ever need to wear clothes? There are people dying in this world from starvation and they are making clothes for cats!

Under the Big Top

Under the Big Top

Ah Britney, oops, you did do it again! Another mime show . . . when will you learn?

Last night was Britney’s first concert in Melbourne and well she did bring the circus. She had clowns, acrobats, little people, a woman missing the lower half of her body and a ringmaster who had lost control. Although we knew she was going to lip-synch the entire show she didn’t even try to mouth it in time with the pre recorded music. It was one of the most aesthetically pleasing shows I have ever been to. The costumes were beautiful; the set was creative and there was a hell of a lot of gyrating. Let me tell you with all her costume changes and two kids, she is not that innocent! Look ,its Britney, we love to hate her. I guess this concert proved that she was just a product of the record companies, no talent-sex sells. There were 12 back-up dancers who, were given a 1-minute opportunity to strut their stuff during the concert and were not even dancing to Spear’s music. But rather Jay-Z and Rhianna proved to be more favourable to dance to. Britney honestly looked like a tortured soul. She seemed so unenthused and exhausted. I think for everyone’s sake its time Britney left the circus of the music business.

Those carbs will go straight to your toes.

Twin brothers and designers R&E Praspaliauskas have created a collection of shoes made entirely of bread. The Carbolicious shoes come in an array of designs and dough pieces. Thank-god it’s not a one size fits all! Children’s sizes are also available. Each pair cost 26 Euros and comes packaged like any other shoe… in a box.
